News: Resource: Good Policy and Practice in HIV/AIDS Education UNESCO The Good Policy and Practice in HIV & AIDS and Education booklets are intended for a wide audience and are based on a review of published and unpublished literature, program activities (undertaken primarily but not exclusively by UNESCO) and case studies. They aim to highlight issues and lessons learned from HIV and AIDS program implementation by the education sector and suggest policy and programming strategies and actions in less developed countries. Understanding that only local solutions will solve local challenges, this series of booklets on Good Policy and Practice in HIV & AIDS and Education aims to pull together a variety of programmatic and policy experiences from different regions that can be drawn upon when addressing community, district or national HIV and AIDS education needs. Booklet 1 provides an overview of why HIV and AIDS are important issues for the education sector, identifies weaknesses in current policy and programming responses and highlights evidence gaps. Booklet 2 discusses issues affecting learners in the context of HIV and AIDS, including rights and access to education, protection, knowledge and skills, and care and support. Booklet 3 addresses issues affecting educators in the context of HIV and AIDS including training, conduct, and care and support. Booklet 4 concentrates on the role and importance of strategic partnerships in developing education sector responses to HIV and AIDS. Booklet 5 focuses on the topic of effective learning using illustrative examples. Intended mainly for government, donor and NGO policy-makers, planners and managers working in the education sector, we hope that the booklets will also be useful for school governing bodies, administrators, head teachers, teachers and other educators who are tackling some of the challenges presented by the AIDS pandemic. Development, Conduct and Support: Booklet 4: Partnerships in Practice: Booklet 5: Effective Learning: During the Miss Namibia Pageant 2008, two Namibian 'Women of Excellence' will be identified. In the course of 2007, outgoing Miss Namibia Marichen Luiperth (left) traveled around Namibia, identifying women who made a difference in the lives of others. The competition closed in October 2007 and judging took place in November 2007. The 'Women of Excellence' initiative adds a further dimension to the Pageant, showing the powers of women to change Namibia and the World, and creating additional inspiring role models. At the same event, the winners of the 'Women of Excellence' were showcased. They are Monitronics Success College and Okahandja Home Based Care Centre. Each of these projects will receive N$25 000 from Standard Bank Namibia. Susan de Beer, Margreth Hange and Anna Owoseb received the donation on the behalf of Okahandja Home Based Care Center.
Standard Bank’s “Woman of Excellence” Award 2008
We, as the Okahandja Home-Based Caregivers, would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts, that you chose us (Susan, Anna and Margreth), as your “Woman Of Excellence for 2008”. We hope that we will make you proud !
Thank you, first of all for the N$35 000.00 you contributed towards our project – we need these funds desperately to continue doing the important work in our community and especially helping underprivileged people living with HIV/Aids.
Secondly, we want to thank you that you have noticed the work our Caregivers have been doing so unselfishly and voluntarily for the past four years. We went through hard times, almost giving up at times, but this award shows us, that other people care and recognize our efforts.
It was a great honor and privilege to be on the same stage as our lovely Miss Namibia contestants and good for our project to be publicly exposed on TV and in the media – this might just be the beginning of a great future for the Okahandja Home-Based Caregivers and our clients and definitely a step in the right direction for the fight against this dreadful pandemic.
Know that you will always be welcome at our premises in Nau-Aib, Okahandja.

Our Mission: “Okahandja Home-Based Caregivers” were established to contribute towards care, education, restoring hope and improving quality of life for HIV/Aids sufferers in our community. Application for funding and/or donations: Introduction In order for our HIV/Aids program to continue operating, we urgently need funds and/or donations. We only have funds up to the end of March and we depend on contributions from our community and other caring donors. We operate from a building in the centre of the Nau-Aib on Joel Humba Street – exactly where help is needed most. Below is the background and additional information would gladly be provided by Me. Magdalena Meyer, our leader and Mrs. Susan de Beer, our treasurer.
Background information: · We are a group of volunteers, trained as Home-Based Caregivers by the MoHSS, from all walks of life, different cultures and languages, that care for the people in our community, living with H.I.V/Aids. We have been operating as an organization since October 2004 and renovated our building during 2006 (with the help of NAMDEB and Bank Windhoek), situated in the centre of Nau-Aib. Our main activity has always been Home-Based Care – care for the client in his/her home. · We are 15 active Caregivers (14 female and 1 male) and managed since then to train our members in several positions like: General Management; Resource Mobilization; Financial Management; Project Cycle Management; TOT Home-Based Care and Community Outreach and Nutrition Management through different NGO’s. |
