Our Problem:

Okahandja has a huge number of under-privileged, poverty-stricken HIV and AIDS sufferers. Such persons are more often than not, in total denial of their HIV status, because of fear, a lack of knowledge and stigma.

Below are some of the more specific problems that we have experienced in the past:

1.      There is a general lack of information on:

-     Where to get tested
and counseled confidentially
-          The HIV and AIDS disease
itself (what is HIV and what is AIDS?)
-          The way in which the virus infects, spreads and affects peoples’ lives
-     Better living conditions and nutrition for HIV/Aids clients
-    The use of ARV
-medicine for HIV/Aids clients
-          The STD-clinic at Okahandja Hospital where ARV’s are administered and distributed
-          Disability grants and drought relief funds of the government

2.      A lack of funds/means to travel to and from:

-          The local state hospital and clinics for symptomatic treatment , counseling, blood tests and ARV’s

3.      A lack of funds for:

-          The most basic of food to survive
-          Basic medicines. (Although the state charge a relatively small amount, it is still not within the means of many patients)
-          Soap and clean water to keep clean
-          Warm clothes and bedding for winter
-          A proper roof over their heads, especially when the family rejects the HIV/Aids person
